Editor's Notes:
---------------

I have more news for you guys this week! Everything is done!! In fact,
Nick was finalizing things with the art people when I spoke with him. He
also gave me a sneak peak of "Shadowlife"! Just enough to keep me on the
edge of my seat for this album. Let me tell you guys, you will NOT be
disappointed. They sound AWESOME!!! The one thing that really stood out
was Don's voice. He's at his best!! You guys are going to be very very
impressed. I'm excited just thinking about how much you're going to love
this album! Thanks, Nick, for that teaser!! 8)

Speaking of Nick, everyone wish him a Happy Birthday on March 10th! It's
really cool because he's one of the few people who have the same birthday
as me!! *grin* March 10 Pisces... RAHHHH!

I also received a copy of the Munetaka Higuchi & Dream Castle album this week!
This is the review I did of the CD for the King's X Mailinglist, Gretchen
Goes to the Internet (to join, send email to kingsx@fleming.xo.com and tell
him you want to subscribe!).

Oh My!!!!!!! OH MY!!!!!!! *drools*

I just recieved a copy of "Munetaka Higuchi and Dream Castle" in the mail!
Some of you may be going, "huh?" Well, this is an album that just came out
in Japan and includes the likes of our Man, Ty Tabor, as well as two of my
faves, Jeff Pilson and Don Dokken. As if they weren't cool enough, you can
also find Steve Vai, Stanley Clarke, Billy Sheehan, Ronnie James Dio, Terry
Bozzio, Stevie Salas, Tracy G, TM Stevens, and Michael Thompson on the CD.

Higuchi is a drummer from Japan, and a REALLY good one from the sounds of
this album. I had never heard of him until my best friend Robin Walton
*waves at Frank and Robin* sent me a forwarded message from Ty about Jeff
and Don being on the album with him. An album that Jeff and Don never
bothered to mention to us *playfully pouts at Jeff and Don*. It was cool
though because we were totally surprised. See, we had been hoping that
some of the guys in KX would work with some of the guys in Dokken. Now
that seems to have some true.

The song list is as follows:
1. Nuclear Foot -- music by Munetaka Higuchi/Ty Tabor
   Guitars: Ty Tabor
   Bass: Billy Sheehan
   Drums: Munetaka Higuchi
2. What Cost War -- words/music by Jeff Pilson
   Vocals: Ronnie James Dio
   Guitar: Tracy G
   Bass: Jeff Pilson
   Drums: Munetaka Higuchi
3. Free World -- music by Munetaka Higuchi
   Guitars: Ty Tabor
   Bass: Jeff Pilson
   Prec: Paulinho Da Costa
   Drums: Munetaka Higuchi
4. Speed -- music by Steve Vai
   Guitar: Steve Vai
   Bass: Steve Vai
   Drums: Munetaki Higuchi
5. Macro Media -- music by munetaka Higuchi/Hiroaki Matsuzawa
   Guitar: Michael Thompson
   Keys: John Schreiner
   Drums: Terry Bozzio
           Munetaka Higuchi
6. Tell Me True -- words/music by Billy Sheehan
   Vocals: Don Dokken
   Guitars: Michael Thompson
   Bass: Bill Sheehan
   Drums: Munetaka Higuchi
7. Bell -- music by Munetaka Higuchi
   Guitar: Ty Tabor
   Bass: Billy Sheehan
   Perc: Paulinho Da Costa
   Drums: Munetaka Higuchi
8. Super Prime Mover -- words/music by Stevie Salas
   Vocals: Stevie Salas
   Chorus: Ritchie Kotzen
   Guitar: Stevie Salas
   Bass: TM Stevens
   Drums: Munetaka Higuchi
9. Mars -- music by Munetaka Higuchi
   Guitar: Ty Tabor
   Bass: Tony Franklin
   Drums: Munetaka Higuchi
10. Freeze Frame -- music by Munetaka Higuchi/Ty Tabor
    Guitar: Ty Tabor
    Bass: Stanley Clarke
    Drums: Munetaka Higuchi

About the songs... They all kick major ass!! There's no other way to put
it. This album was like a Ty Tabor album. All guitars on 5 of the 10 tunes!
I'll tell you... if you were to play this album for me and not tell me who
was on guitar, I wouldn't be able to tell you it was Ty. He sounds WAY
different on this album. Very heavy, very Hendrix in parts, very cool stuff!
He really stretched his wings on this project. All of Ty's songs are
instrumental, which is awesome!! No words to get in the way when you're
listening to his wonderful playing!!

Speaking of the vocal tunes, all three of them are really cool. It's somehow
really appropriate that Ronnie James Dio sings the tune that Jeff Pilson
wrote. It's a great, rockin' song too!! Jeff is one heck of a songwriter,
so I don't expect anything but the best from him, and I have never been
disappointed! The instrumental that Jeff and Ty play on together is one of
my favorites on the album. Don Dokken's vocal tune is nothing short of
wonderful. He has such an expressive voice, and this song was perfect for
him!! It was almost like Billy had Don in mind when he wrote it!

Overall, if you guys can get your hands on this album, I HIGHLY suggest that
you do so! It's only a Japanese release, but someone sent me email yesterday
to tell me they ordered it from Impulse Music and Video (check out my page for
a link to their site.. I'm really bad at remembering URLs!). I'm sure it
can be found through most CD importers. It's on BMG Japan.

OK.. I'm going to listened to this album until my speakers blow.. Talk to
you guys later!!

-=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=--=*%*=-

Let's see.. what else... *grin* This is the time we should start remembering
all of the great suggestions for supporting the new album. I'm thinking about
reposting the promotion contest winners' posts in the next issue. There were
some awesome suggestions, and we should start thinking about getting them
rolling!

Also, I finally updated the radio list on Dokken Central. Please take a look
and send me any stations that aren't listed. Thanks!!

That's about it for me this issue. Time to go party off a few brain cells!

Rokken Robin:
-------------

Rokken Robin, back from all those fuss and feathers for the last few weeks
to give the ol' soapbox a workout...

First off, man, ain't it great news to know the album is done? I mean
*done*. Mixed, mastered, and a tape en route to Tokyo. This is not a
drill, this ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin'
around, this is the real deal. At long last. Jeff assures us this album
is a real "move to the left" for them--but it's *their* move to the left.
It's the "artistic statement" *Dokken* wanted to make. So, while you can
rest assured that it's not going to be the same spiritless pablum we're
being fed by most of the broadcast media, neither is it "Under Lock And
Key" redux. Look at it this way: As "Dysfunctional" was originally a
Don/Jeff collaboration only and Mick and eventually George came into it
almost after the fact, Dokken haven't really done a *band* project together
in ten years, since "Back For The Attack". These four musicians have grown
a lot in ten years, improved, evolved. Now, don't panic, they're not going
to stop short of rockin' your bootys to bits. But in terms of
musicianship, imagination, lyrical profundity, they're a lot further down
the road than they were in 1987, and all four of them sound the best they
ever have in their careers. So whatever conjectures anyone tosses up, keep
an open mind on April 15th. You're going to get a very pleasant musical
surprise. Those of you who saw the mini-tour dates have already had a
little taste.

Now, Kirsten said she was gonna post a review of that great Munetaka
Higuchi CD here so I won't duplicate other than to mention it's incredible,
buy it by any means necessary. But I will say it's a shame BMG apparently
felt it was unmarketable here in the US, because it's import-only. I can't
think of any other reason they wouldn't put it out here. The anti-metal
climate of radio and MTV sorta wrote that ticket ahead of time, IMHO. But
I think it's important to support such great musicianship. We all
*appreciate* it or we wouldn't be here, right? But actively supporting and
studying it is important. Let me explain...

Rolling Stone recently came out with an article decrying the cuts in
funding for arts programmes in public schools, especially music. They
cited that only 14% of schools, at this time, in the United States have
music programmes. The arts are considered "expendable" and are the first
to go when the ax falls. This is no fat they are trimming from the budget,
folks, and music is not a case of simple aesthetics. Children who have
received music education early in life were found to score measureably
higher than their non-musical peers in verbal and math skills--and, later
on, in their SAT scores. At a time when there's all this weeping and
moaning about American students' academic performances compared to those of
the rest of the world, what sense does it make to cut what is a *proven*
asset to education?

Well, if the public schools won't do it, we'll have to do it ourselves.
Teach your children. If you don't have children, teach yourself. Being a
Dokken fan is a heck of a good jumping off point. Are you wild about
George's guitar playing? If it's the bluesy bits that get you going, why
not check out some Muddy Waters or Elmore James, or if it's the more jazzy
stuff you dig, there's a host of brilliant jazz guitarists to listen to.
Is it Jeff's stellar, virtuoso bass playing for you? Now you're in *my*
fave neck of the woods--check out the bottom line, from the simple pop
genius of Sting and Paul McCartney, to the sinewy funk might of Bootsy
Collins and Mark King, to the mach-speed wizardry of Abraham Laboriel and
Stanley Clarke. Maybe it's Mick's powerhouse drumming--on this upcoming
album you'd be hard put not to be impressed! Well, there's a whole world
of percussion to explore--the immense tribal drums of Japan, the
razor-sharp pop of an Irish bodhran, the traditional rhythmic tapestries
woven by African and South American percussionists, the polyrhythmic
E-ticket ride of Frank Zappa's "Black Page", with full orchestral
percussion. Or maybe it's Don's vocals that send you blissward. If you're
intrigued by the intricate, qawwali-influenced "rides" he takes, you might
want to check out an album by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Or if it's the blues
that get to you, so many have sung them over the years--and not all fellas.
Why not give a listen to Billie Holiday--or Janis Joplin?

There's a little exploration for you--now about that education. You don't
necessarily have to hock your house and send the kids to Julliard or GIT.
See what instrument they--or you--gravitate toward, and consider lessons.
You don't need to spend a fortune; Your Local Starving Musician would
probably be thrilled to teach a few guitar chords and basic scales in
return for lunch money once in a while. Whet their appetites, and yours.
If music isn't the kids' "thing", they certainly won't be any worse off for
the exposure. My son's studying acting now, but that little bit of
drumming training I gave him early in life certainly couldn't have hurt his
sense of timing, or ability to move and dance on stage, and "feel" cues.
Don't underestimate the good it can do. Go ahead into a "browser friendly"
music store. Strum a guitar, feel the steel. Tap various-sized cowbells
and note the tonal differences. Check out a basic synthesizer even if you
never got past "Chopsticks" and play with the settings, the attack and
decay, the sustain, the preset patches. You don't have to become the next
George Lynch, but you can gain a fuller appreciation of the George Lynch
we've got--and maybe even up your next algebra test score a few clicks.
Educate yourself. The way things are going, pretty soon ain't anybody
going to do it for you.

"Think--it ain't illegal yet." - Gil Scott Heron

Peace/out--

[ Bravo! Bravo!! *applauds loudly* I couldn't agree more. A few things
music definately teaches you are dedication, responsibility and appreciation.
I think back on everything I learned throughout my education, and the things
that make me who I am all come from all of my years in band and all of the
years I've listened to music. My leadership qualities, my appreciation of
how hard musicians work, my ability to be responsible, my willingness to
work hard. No, I didn't learn computers in music class, but I learned
that everything comes with a bit of practice, and not to be intimidated
because it looks difficult at first (yes, even yours truely was once a
technophobe!). Years of sight reading music can do wonders for that kind
of mentality! ;) And grades? What Robin said about that is absolutely
true. Us "Band Nerds" were amoung the brightest in the school, not
because we were any smarter than anyone else, but because we knew how to
work hard and get results. Not to mention, musicians tend to be very
outgoing, and so we'd soak up class participation points too! *evil grin*
And think about how it would affect your ability to get up in front of
people.... sure, I still get nervous when I have to give a talk to a room
full of physics profs, but I'm not paralyzed with fear! There are so
many positive reasons to teach music, or to learn music.

I remember a few years ago when KY was going to cut funding for public
schools' music programs, and the state went nuts. I think it was my
senior year of high school. A majority of the band showed up at a school
board meeting to voice their opinions, and after this happened all over
the place, we didn't lose our music programs. Unfortunately, it seems
like the schools care less and less, so we need to start caring more.

That's all... I'll stop my rambling now! 8) --KYD]

	Hey All,

I read something in issue #100 about the "Munetaka Higuchi and Dream
Castle" cd. I am looking forward to trying to nab a copy of it myself. I
found a web-site at the URL:

			     http://www.cdeurope.com

This site specializes in European/Japanese imports, with mail order as well
as credit card orders. This site doesn't yet list the Higuchi project (I
don't know what the release date is or was on this cd), but it might be a
good place to find something like that. I thought I'd let you know about it.
I was also surprised to read in the "Year In Review" issue that Ray
Gillen was dead. I know this is off topic, but I was wondering how and when
he died? I would appreciate any information any of you could give me.
Sorry for the off-topic post. I'm Looking forward to April 15th...and
it has NOTHING to do with the tax deadline!!!! Later!

								Peace,
								   Mace

[ For those of you who didn't know Ray was dead, he died a few years ago
of stomach cancer, I believe. 8( The music world lost a very talented

Dear Goddess of BTC--Kristen,

I'm sorry I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to wish you
congradulations on issue 100. Well here it is, better late than never I
always say (being that I'm usually late with everything I do.),
CONGRATS--100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was reading number 100 and saw the post about Sammy Hagar's new album and
tour. I can hardly stay seated. Sammy's my Elvis Presley. If it weren't
for Standing Hampton and Three Lock Box (82' & 83' albums) I probably
wouldn't be into Hard Rock/Heavy Metal today. But with that said I love
hearing all the news about DOKKEN every week. They are my Beatles.

I hope your still with me because here's my point. Your newsletter gives
me so much happiness. All the Dokkenites out there can communicate to one
another, share their info and experiences with one another. THAT'S
AWESOME!!!!

I hope you know that I'm very appreciative of all your hard work and hope
you know we all care. Please enjoy this because over 600 fans and myself
most certainly do!

Looking forwad to the next 100!!!!!

YOU RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DOKKEN RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE'RE NOT
WORTHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get my imports through 2 vendors. You might want to take a look. I
ordered Munitaka Higuchi's Dream Castle. My vendor (Terrible Ted's)
should have it in on Thursday. I'll tell you how it is when I get it.

I'm also looking for Time Capsule.

I was told that it might not be available no longer in the states. It
might only be avail as an import.

From: Jeremy Haines

Hi. I've been lurking for a while, periodically catching up with
BTC's back issues at Dokken Central, and I figured I'd finally throw my
hat in the ring for issue #101.

I was introduced to Dokken back in 1984 when my older brother
purchased "Tooth and Nail". I remember the first time he popped in the
tape and "Without Warning" came on - I was completely transfixed by it.
I'd never heard anything as hauntingly beautiful as that before...and then
it just exploded into the title track. Needless to say, I was hooked. I
wound up "borrowing" the tape from him on a fairly permanent basis, much
to his chagrin; and when I finally entered the world of CDs in 1987,
"Tooth and Nail" was the first one I bought.

My first and only Dokken concert was the Monsters of Rock
extravaganza in the summer of 1988. My seats weren't great, but the
performances of all the bands were top-notch. Unfortunately, Don struck
me that day as being rather arrogant, and pretty much every fourth word
out of his mouth was "fuck", but I guess he's matured quite a bit since
then. I also managed to see Lynch Mob at Toad's Place in New Haven right
at the beginning of the "Wicked Sensation" tour. God, that was a great
show. I was literally 3 feet away from George the entire time, and it was
truly a wondrous thing to see him perform up close like that. Mick was
groovin' that night, too!

I remember being progressively more disappointed with George's
work after "Wicked Sensation"; so much so that I'd pretty much written him
off after hearing "Sacred Groove". But seeing Don and Jeff's names in the
song credits got the wheels turning in my head, and I suspected that
something was up. Then I heard about the acoustic show at the Strand, and
I was completely giddy...Dokken was back together! My excitement
continued to build as the release of "Dysfuntional" drew near and I heard
"Too High to Fly" several times on the radio. That song wasn't the
strongest one in the world, but it was certainly a step in the right
direction. Finally, at 12:01am on the day it was released, I picked up
"Dysfunctional". I was initially disappointed with what I heard, but I
grew to love several songs and I like nearly all of them. Their new
direction is an interesting one with a lot of potential, and I'm sure that
playing together over the last couple of years has enabled them to catch
their stride again. I'm really looking forward to "Shadow Life", and I
plan on purchasing it at 12:01am on April 15th (one minute after my
birthday ends, incidentally).

I guess that's all for now. Greetings to everyone out there in
Dokkenland - I'd like to invite all of you to visit my Bruce Dickinson /
Skunkworks page (URL below) if the former singer for Iron Maiden interests
you at all. He and Adrian Smith recently recorded an album together
called "Accident of Birth", which will probably be released in May...and I
imagine it'll be mandatory listening for all Maiden fans past and present.
More information about this and many other related topics are available on
my web site.

Thanks for reading and enduring my shameless plug. I look forward
to blabbing with all you other Dokken fans sometime soon...

[ I felt quite the opposite way about George's work. I heard Sacred Groove
and it really excited me. I still think that album contains some of his
best work!! Incidently, one of my favorite George Lynch songs can't be
found on any of his albums, but on a tribute! His playing on "People Get
Ready" (Jeffology) is AMAZING! It gives me goosebumps everytime!! --KYD]

Well, I was gonna tell you that you can still get the Hear n Aid
japanese record, but someone beat me to it in 100! That's ok though:)
Wanna let you know that Impulse Music (the advertise in Metal Edge)
carries it, as well as all dokken imports and tonz of other great bands.
I know you're not big on pushing businesses, but these people are so
nice! They are just a couple who started this little mail order thing in
their home and now they own their own business! It's the american dream,
and they're metalheads too, that's the cool part! Anyways I went into
their store and they gave me the poster that CMC sent them to advertise
for OLN and a flat for it too. That brings me up to 6 posters including
my Sacred Groove one!!! They also played the promo of the new
Queensryche album for me. I know a lot of Dokkenites love similar music,
and I'm sorry to inform you all that the Queensryche that we know and
love is no longer with us:( Geoff sang in only one octave, and the
music was not the progressive daring stuff that we're used to! What is
happening to our music? I know Dokken will save the day!

       Jenn

[ Thanks for the info, Jenn. I agree with her 100%. Impulse has been
very cool and helpful to me in the past. I remember calling them up
about "One Live Night" a few years ago, and we ended up sitting on the
phone chatting for over an hour! --KYD]

Last Generation -

Hello friends of Dokken. Another year, another album, and another tour
await us, and I for one couldn't be happier. Dokken has consistently put
out some of the very best music on this planet, and their live show of
course is second to none. When I first joined BTC, I shared my DOKKEN RULES
OHMYGOD post. I've already posted my reviews of the two (excellent!) times
I've seen Dokken live (Milwaukee Summerfest '95 and the Vic Theatre in
Chicago in summer '95). I've posted my reviews of OLN and stuff like that.
I've urged everyone to buy Warrant96 (and I suppose I'm doing it again).
But I won't waste everyone's time again with such frivolous excursions.
Instead, I'll do something I don't believe I have properly said in the past.
I'd just like to thank Kirsten and the rest of the BTC staff for their hard
work and their dedication to this band that I have only recently come to
know. It's been a lot of fun reading BTC every week, and I always look
forward to it. No, I'm not ass-KISSing here, I'm being serious. Thanks,
Kirsten, for all of your hard work. ROKKEN!

Great job! I want to thank you for trying to quelch the nasty rumors people try
to spread about the band. For the life of me I can't understand why people do
such juvenile things. I really enjoyed the "Year in Review" issues and Issue(s)
100. They were a good way for me to catch up. This is a great way for me to
discuss Dokken, because no one else I know likes them, let alone even knows who
they are (except because of me)! I support the idea of having groups gather in
geographic areas to support the band. We need to do everything we can to make
sure this music doesn't die. I'm looking forward to the new album, as everyone
is. I'm sure it'll be great, just look at the talent involved -- how can they
go wrong.

In an unrelated Dokken item, I am desperately in search of a CD by a band
called Saraya. Anybody out there remember them? They had a hit off the album
called "Love Has Taken It's Toll". The lead singer Sandi Saraya is (or was?)
married to Brian Wheat from Tesla. Well, anyway, I'm looking for their first
album on CD and have found it nowhere. If anyone knows how I can get my hands
on it, pleasee-mail me at: jgarvin@mbt.com. Thanks so much!

Lastly, I'd just like to enter my thoughts on the top 3 performances:

George Lynch:
Dysfunctional -- Long Way Home
Back For The Attack -- Mr. Scary
Under Lock & Key -- Jaded Heart

Jeff Pilson:
Back For The Attack -- Kiss Of Death
Dysfunctional -- Shadows Of Life
Tooth And Nail -- When Heaven Comes Down

Mick Brown:
Back For The Attack -- Mr. Scary
One Live Night -- I Will Remember (strange choice, I know)
Tooth And Nail -- Tooth And Nail

Don Dokken:
Tooth And Nail -- Alone Again
Dysfunctional -- Nothing Left To Say
Under Lock & Key -- In My Dreams

Harmonies:
Under Lock & Key -- In My Dreams
Dysfunctional -- Shadows Of Life
One Live Night -- Unchain The Night

One last thing, I want to also thank Robin, Gerard and Larry for giving us some
insight into the actual men who make up the band. I don't mean this as a
kiss-up in anyway. I just think everyone deserves a big thanks for all their
hard work. Even though we really admire George, Jeff, Mick and Don, when it
comes down to it they're human just like us with the same flaws,
idiosyncracies, senses of humor and feelings -- and Robin, Gerard and Larry
have done a nice job of bringing that through. Keep up the good work! And
thanks to all the subscribers who keep in touch! Sorry this ran so long.

Julie

[ That's right!! I promised to give you guys my list, didn't I? *grin*

Subject: Dokken on Audionet

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that the entire One Live
Night CD is featured on AudioNet in the Rock section. Unfortunately it's only
in mono, but it's great to just listen to the music anytime I feel like it at
work.

The URL is: http://ww2.audionet.com/jukebox. This is a frames document. Then
go to the Rock section. You will need RealAudio to listen to the CD's. There
are also a lot of other 80's rock bands featured with one of their (usually
latest) albums on-line. It's interesting to note that CMC happens to be the
record company for most of these bands. It looks like they are doing quite a
good job at supporting/promoting the 80's Rock bands. Let's hope they continue
to so with entusiasm.

Take care, and as always, you are doing one fine job with this newsletter.
Keep Rokken!

To Kirsten and everyone at BTC: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Wow, 100 issues. That is awesome. You all do a great job.
The set up is very professional and I am constantly amazed
by how up-to-date your information is. Dokken must be proud
to have fans and friends like yourselves.

Well, enough of the pats-on-backs. This is only my second
submission to BTC so I beg for your indulgence. Firstly,
after spending many months thinking I had lost them forever,
I finally found my tapes of "Under Lock and Key" and "Back
for the Attack". Holy Shit, it is so great to hear them
again. I liked Dysfunctional, but I do prefer Dokken at
their more melodic stage. I can't tell you how much I missed
hearing songs like "Unchain the Night", "Lightening
Strikes", and "Burning Like A Flame". If the new album is a
mix of these and the stuff off Dysfunctional, well that
would be awesome.

Secondly, in October of this year I will be landing on your
shores for about a three week holiday. I can hear you all
saying, "it's only #@$%&*! March". The reason I'm telling
you now is so I might get to know some of you before I get
over there. Don't worry, I'm not looking for free rides or
places to crash. I would like to meet fellow rock fans who
might be interested in seeing a few concerts, especially
Dokken if the are touring at the time. New Zealand is the
last place you get melodic rock concerts. Over here it's
either alternative, dance or extreme metal. We have a great
country, but no taste in music. I'll definitely be in LA for
about 4 days from the 1st of October. We (my girlfriend and
I) travel up to San Fran for at least a week from the 6th to
the 12th. After that it might be Colorado, Boston and New
York.

So, if anyone is interested in getting together I'd love to
hear from you. I'm just a good old Kiwi boy looking for Rock
n Roll!! Also, could anyone tell where the best cd shops
are. I don't mind second hand.Thankyou for your patience.

Regards from Down Under

Luigi Cisaria
